I have been sharing my outfit of the day from the 2026 All American Quarter Horse Congress on my Facebook page, with Day 1 through Day 4 posted so far.
For the Quarter Horse Congress, wear jeans, broken-in boots, and layers you can take off, because October in Columbus averages a high of about 66°F and a low of about 45°F. Add a western touch with a printed button-up or turquoise jewelry. If you are showing, your class attire follows the AQHA rulebook.
Here is what to plan for, plus the outfits I wore at the 2026 Congress.

The Quick Answer: A Congress Outfit Formula
If you are going as a spectator, here is a simple formula.
| Piece | Suggestion | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Bottoms | Jeans | Western riders most often choose jeans because the denim stands up to ranch work |
| Top | A western-print button-up or a graphic tee | Easy to layer |
| Layer | A vest, flannel, or jacket | October lows in Columbus average about 45°F |
| Shoes | Broken-in western boots | The trade show alone covers over 20 acres |
| Accessories | Turquoise jewelry, a hat, a sturdy tote | A western finish and a place to carry your layers |
The Congress is spread out. The trade show alone covers over 20 acres of indoor and outdoor areas, so plan your outfit around a lot of walking.
Dress for October Weather in Columbus
The Congress is a four-week show at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio. The 2026 show dates are September 26 through October 24.
According to the National Weather Service climate summary for Columbus in October, the average high is about 66°F and the average low is about 45°F, with about 2.9 inches of precipitation for the month. That is about a 20-degree spread between the average low and the average high.
- Start with a tee or button-up you would be happy wearing on its own
- Add a vest, flannel, or light jacket you can take off
- Keep a rain layer in the truck or your tote
Pro tip: If you are hauling a horse to a show, my horse show packing list covers what I actually bring.
Start With Your Boots
Pick boots you have already broken in, because you will be doing a lot of walking.
If you plan to ride or work around horses at all, footwear matters even more. AQHA's riding attire guide recommends a boot with about a 1 to 1½ inch heel and low tread, and it says to never wear sandals or flip-flops in case a horse steps on you.
New to the barn? My guide to horse terms every beginner should know is a good place to start.
My 2026 Congress Outfits, Day by Day
At the 2026 Congress, I have been posting an outfit of the day on Facebook. Here is what I wore for Day 1 through Day 4, the days posted at the time of writing.
Day 1: A Turquoise Squash Blossom

For Day 1, I wore a tee with a turquoise squash blossom necklace.
Day 2: A Western-Print Button-Up

Day 2 was a button-up shirt with a cowboy and horse print, plus stacked turquoise and silver cuffs.
Day 3: Boot and Horse Print With Jeans

On Day 3, I wore a short-sleeve top with a boot and horse print, jeans, and a big buckle. Day 3 was also when I wore my new Cowgirl Social Club apparel from Unbridled Couture, which you can order online or shop in person at their Congress booth, #716.
Day 4: A Double D Ranch Jacket

For Day 4, I wore a Double D Ranch jacket.
If you want to wear a little Running Springs to the show, take a look at our horse merch.
Western Accessories
A few accessory ideas for a western look:
- Turquoise. A squash blossom necklace, cuffs, or rings.
- A hat. According to AQHA's article on traditional attire, cowboy hats are considered traditional attire in AQHA classes in the United States.
- Shoe charms. If you are wearing comfy shoes on a travel day, charms add personality. I rounded up the best accessories to pair with shoe charms, and our shoe charms collection includes foal, goat, and mini farm designs.
- A sturdy tote. You will want somewhere to put a layer and anything you buy at the trade show.
If You Are Showing: Dressing for the Show Pen
Exhibitor attire is a different conversation from spectator style. Your class requirements come from the AQHA rulebook, so check it for your class before you pack. My AQHA rules guide is a beginner-friendly overview.
For style, AQHA published tips from Suzanne Vlietstra of Hobby Horse Clothing Co. in a guide aimed at riders older than 50:
- Chaps are the most important part of a western show outfit because they cover more than half your body.
- Chaps that fit up on your natural waist give the appearance of longer legs, and they should fit like a glove without being too tight.
- Try vests rather than jackets, and cotton rather than synthetics, if you have that option.
- Match a simple, plain belt to your pants and chaps.
- Skip oversized conchos. Too much decoration can look like a shiny mish-mash from across the arena, which is how the judge sees you.
And do not forget your horse's turnout. My horse mane care guide covers pulling and braiding.
What Not to Wear to the Congress
A few things to leave at home:
- Sandals and flip-flops. AQHA says to never wear them around horses in case you get stepped on.
- Boots you have never worn. Break in new boots before the trip.
- Only one layer. Columbus averages about a 20-degree spread between October highs and lows.
If this is your first time around horses, my post on what to expect your first time riding a horse covers what to wear for a first ride, including closed-toe shoes with a small heel.
Meet the Herd at Running Springs
Running Springs is our family farm in Nolensville, Tennessee. We raise Quarter Horses, cattle, and a whole crew of mini animals. Our stallions are VS Code Red (Waylon) and First Thingz First (Denver), and Denver has won Congress titles in both 2025 and 2026.
If you want more from the farm, come follow along on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. And if you want to take a piece of the farm home with you, check out our horse shirts and graphic tees. You can learn more about me on my About page or in my Frequently Asked Questions.
The Bottom Line on What to Wear to the Congress
For the Quarter Horse Congress, wear jeans, broken-in boots, and layers, with a western touch like a printed button-up or turquoise jewelry. October in Columbus averages a high of about 66°F and a low of about 45°F, and the trade show alone covers more than 20 acres.
If you are showing, check the AQHA rulebook for your class first and think about style second.
